The Movie Star Scale
Every decimal has to be earned.
This isn’t a school grade, and it isn’t a score I hand out just because I had a good time. A movie gets judged against everything that came before it: the classics, the weird ones, the movies that changed the game, and the ones my family has carried with us for years.
The number tells you where the movie lands. The stars are the quick visual shorthand. The decimals count—they show how strongly a movie earns its place inside that number.
| Score | Emoji rating | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| 1.0 | 💀 | Unwatchable. This movie is fighting for its life, and losing. |
| 2.0 | ⭐ | Bad. A few things may work, but not enough to save it. |
| 3.0 | ⭐⭐ | Rough. There is a movie in here somewhere. It just needed more help. |
| 4.0 | ⭐⭐⭐ | Below average. Not a complete disaster, but I wouldn’t rush back. |
| 5.0 | ⭐⭐⭐⭐ | Fine. It does what it came to do, then leaves without making much of a mark. |
| 6.0 | ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ | Good. Worth watching, with enough working to make the rough spots forgivable. |
| 7.0 | ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ | Very good. This is a movie I can recommend without needing a whole speech first. |
| 8.0 | ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ | Great. Strong craft, real personality, and something that sticks with me. |
| 9.0 | ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ | Damn near a classic. This belongs in serious conversations and deserves to be revisited. |
| 10.0 | ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ 🏆 | All-timer. This movie earns a place beside the movies that built the scale. |
How the decimals work
- .0 — the clean, whole-number rank.
- .1–.3 — the movie is at the lower end of that tier.
- .4–.6 — the movie sits squarely in the middle.
- .7–.9 — the movie is pushing toward the next tier.
So a 7.2 is a solid very-good movie, while a 7.8 is knocking on the door of great. A 9.8 can be almost untouchable, but it is still not a 10.0.
What makes a 10?
A 10/10 is not just “perfect.” Perfect is a pointless standard—movies are made by people, not robots. A 10 is a movie with the craft, impact, staying power, and emotional weight to stand shoulder-to-shoulder with the movies that came before it.
That means the scale has a ceiling for a reason. I can love a movie, laugh all the way through it, or have a personal connection to it and still give it a 7.6. The heart gets a vote, but nostalgia doesn’t get to rig the ballot.
